Major Gifts Officer Development Department Regional Major Gifts Office Alexandria, Virginia The American Humane Association is the oldest national organization dedicated to protecting both children and animals. Founded in 1877, American Humane is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. Through a network of child and animal protection agencies and individuals, American Humane develops policies, legislation, curricula and training programs to protect children and animals from abuse, neglect and exploitation. The nonprofit membership organization, headquartered in Denver, raises awareness about The Link® between animal abuse and other forms of violence, as well as the benefits derived from the human-animal bond. American Humane’s regional office in Los Angeles is the authority behind the “No Animals Were Harmed”® End Credit Disclaimer on TV and film productions, and American Humane’s office in Washington is an advocate for child and animal protection at the federal and state levels. American Humane meets the strong, comprehensive standards of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance and has been awarded the Independent Charities of America “Best in America” Seal of Approval. American Humane is looking for a strategic, dynamic Major Gifts Officer, Development Department to work at American Humane’s Regional Major Gifts Office in Alexandria, Virginia. This will be a salaried, exempt position and will report to the Vice President, Development, who is located in the Denver headquarters office. There are currently four other Major Gifts Officers: One is based in the Alexandria Office, and the other three are based in the Denver office. Responsibilities include: Effectively communicating the American Humane Association’s mission and goals to donors and prospective donors. Be available for public speaking opportunities. Collaborating with other American Humane personnel to effect broader awareness, understanding, and contributed support for American Humane’s programs and activities by individuals, businesses, and philanthropic foundations. Developing and maintaining a portfolio of 100 -150 major gift prospects capable of giving $10,000 or more to American Humane. Assisting in the efforts to develop and implement the cultivation and solicitation strategies and tactics for major gift prospects. The philanthropic gifts sought would be to support American Humane’s efforts to protect children and animals from abuse and neglect through the Children’s Services and Animal Protection Services divisions, as well as efforts of the Film and Television Unit and Government Affairs offices, in general, and the overall need for unrestricted support of American Humane, in particular. Building and managing relationships with donors leading to sustained and increasing current major gift giving and planned gifts to American Humane to higher levels within the donor recognition tiers. Assisting in the implementation of donor appreciation and appropriate recognition efforts for donors in the major gift portfolio. Being a proven fundraising professional capable of developing and defending strategies for particular donors and implementing them reliably and with sound judgment. The Major Gift Officers will often be the primary relationship with individual major donors who give at least four- to six-figure gifts and a facilitator for individual donors who give six-figure gifts or greater. Being a positive contributor to the Development team and committed to the mission and goals of American Humane. Major Gifts Officers must be capable of working in diverse environments representing the wide range of, but interrelated program interests. Major Gifts Officers will work with other Development department colleagues, as well as with members of the Senior Management Team, Board members and key volunteers. Collegiality and the ability to communicate well are vital to their success. Being capable of traveling as needed to meet with prospects within a wider geographic sphere than their immediate or primary metropolitan area (on average, 3-4 days/month), as more than one geographic area may constitute their assigned area for major gifts efforts. Requirements: The ideal candidate will have at least 5 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in successfully cultivating and soliciting major and planned giving for four- to six-figure gifts or greater, along with a moderate to high competency in various planned giving approaches. Successful candidates will have a professional appearance and demeanor. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their past successes in personal solicitation of major gifts. Computer skills are required in using database, word processing, and spreadsheet software. Experience with Microsoft Office (including Outlook) and planned gift modeling software (e.g., PG Calc. Crescendo) is a plus. The model candidate will also possess highly evolved writing, presentation and public speaking skills. A bachelor’s degree is required. We provide a casual, friendly atmosphere with flexible work hours. The annual salary for this position will be at least $90,000 or more depending on experience and previous compensation. A relocation benefit will be offered to qualified out-of-town candidates.
